GRAVE OF 1812 SOLDIER

After the UDC Confederate Memorial Day ceremony at the LaGrange Church and Cemetery on Saturday, April 26th, 2008, several members of Lt. Wm. Shannon Chapter that were present also placed a wreath and flag on the grave of War of 1812 soldier Andrew Feaster. The LaGrange Church and Cemetery is located on the Old Dixie Highway between Mims and Titusville. The first church was a log structure built in 1869 and later replaced by the structure that stands today.

It was in the year 1869 that Andrew Feaster died. He had moved to this area in 1865 and lived only a few years after arriving. He is one of the first to be buried in the cemetery to the north of the church and his grave is shaded by an old gnarled cedar tree. The grave marker indicates that he fought in the War of 1812 with a unit from South Carolina.

Joyce Sizemore drove over to attend the UDC Memorial Day Ceremony and the ceremony at the grave of Andrew Feaster. Central and North Brevard members of Lt. Wm. Shannon who attended were Jo Compton, Jean Gayle, Libba Johnson, Lila Sandstrom, Anne Schwanda, Glenda Walton and myself.

Lt. William Shannon Chapter 278, National Society United States Daughters of 1812, met on Wednesday, March 5, 2008, at the Eau Gallie Yacht Club. Speaker for the meeting was member Anne Schwanda who is privileged to have many historical family documents.  Mrs. Schwanda’s program consisted of a letter in her possession written by her great, great, great grandfather William Belcher, of Connecticut to his son Nathan Belcher in 1830. Nathan at the time resided in Kentucky and his father was relating interesting information and facts that transpired before and after the War of 1812 to him as well as to the state of the union. Mrs. Schwanda not only shared the actual letter with members present, but also shared many other family documents from that time period.
